At any given time, the MRINZ is hosting a number of practical PhD projects within our clinical research programmes. Candidates may be studying towards their qualification under an international organisation, or with our partner institution Victoria University of Wellington. Past PhD candidates have contributed to landmark studies which have changed international practice in asthma, evidenced new treatments such as for stroke, and developed the foundational evidence based for novel medical devices that may change the landscape of future care.

“I was lucky enough to complete my PhD through the MRINZ, and ran an open label trial investigating the effectiveness of budesonide/formoterol as an anti-inflammatory reliever in mild and moderate asthma. Our primary paper was published in the Lancet and will contribute to a global change in how mild asthma is managed.

Richard Beasley and his team are inspirational. I felt well supported throughout my time at MRINZ and gained all the experience I had hoped for in clinical research methodology. I have now returned to clinical practice as a respiratory registrar in the UK, and my experiences stand me in good stead for continuing to contribute to research during my training, and in applying for consultant jobs in due course.

I can not speak highly enough of the MRINZ PhD programme and the MRINZ team.”

As a physician naïve to the academic world, the MRINZ provided a very supportive environment to embark upon a PhD.  I was able to complete a multi-centre RCT with 99% follow-up only thanks to a helpful team who are now lifelong friends.

Being able to present the results at an international meeting has led to worldwide change in rehabilitation care for people with stroke and has opened up numerous opportunities for me as a clinician-scientist.  I highly recommend MRINZ's PhD programme to anyone considering clinical research in their career.
