Kanuka honey and cold sores
Study title: 5% Aciclovir or Honevo as a treatment for cold sores.

This study aims to establish whether NZ kanuka honey is an effective treatment for cold sores.
A nationwide trial, we are seeking nearly 1000 participants to enrol via our pharmacy research network within three days of the onset of a cold sore.

To take part in this study you must: |

Be aged 16 or over |
|
✔ |
Require treatment for an active coldsore |
|
✔ |
Have coldsore symptoms that have started over the past 72 hours |
|
You will will not be able to take part in the study if: |

|
✗ |
You are pregnant or breastfeeding |
|
✗ |
You are allergic to honey glycerin or aciclovir |
|
✗ |
You have used oral aciclovir or similar for the current cold sore |
|
✗ |
You are planning to use medicine that may affect your cold sore during your participation in the study (Lysine etc) |
You will be randomised to either 5% acyclovir cream or Honevo.
You will be asked to complete a daily diary (30 seconds/day) and final feedback call.
There is no need to travel for study visits as all data is collected remotely.
Treatment is provided at no charge and there is $25 reimbursement for time on completion.
