Airvo and the Common Cold

Study title: Inhalation of heated, humidified air for the common cold - a feasibility study

Registration:      ANZCTR: ACTRN12616000470493

                          Ethics: 16/NTB/47

We are trialling the AIRVO device in the common cold. It delivers warm, humidified air through the nose and may improve your symptoms of the cold by slowing down the virus.

You will be randomised to either using the AIRVO for ideally 2 hours per day for 5 days or to Vitamin C tablets for 5 days.

You will be asked to complete a daily diary (30 seconds/day) and final feedback questionnaire.

You will need to travel to our clinic for the first visit and to take the AIRVO device home with you, and return it to us after 10 days.

To take part in this study you must:

Be aged 16 or over

Have had symptoms of a cold for less than 48 hours

You will not be able to take in the study if:

You have asthma or other chronic lung conditions or have an impaired immune system

You’re taking antibiotics, steroids or inhaled medications

You’ve been using cough lozenges or decongestants in the last 6 hours

You are pregnant or breastfeeding

You are allergic to Vitamin C tablets

Treatment is provided at no charge and there is $100 reimbursement for time on completion.
