MRINZ - The Medical Research Institute of New Zealand is an independent medical research organisation. Our scientists are dedicated to investigating the causes of important public health problems, to use this knowledge to improve the prevention and treatment of diseases, and to provide a base for specialist training in medical research. MRINZ brought together a group of medical specialists and scientists to investigate the causes of important public health problems in New Zealand and internationally and to use this knowledge to improve the prevention and treatment of disease. MRINZ - Medical research highlights and programmes : Alcohol and drug abuse Programme Director: Dr Geoffrey Robinson, Asthma Programme Director: Professor Richard Beasley, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Programme Director: Dr Philippa Shirtcliffe, Venous Tromboembolism Programme Director: Professor Richard Beasley, Pharmacovigilance Programme Director: Dr Sarah Aldington, Maori and Pacific Health Programme Director: Dr Matire Harwood, Rehabilitation/Stroke Programme Director: Dr Harry McNaughton, and Public Health Policy Programme Director: Dr Peter Roberts. MRINZ - COPD. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a syndrome referring to a group of conditions including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is one of the most important and common medical conditions affecting adults worldwide, with considerable morbidity and mortality. MRINZ - Asthma. Found out the use of isotonic nebulised magnesium sulphate as an Adjuvant to salbutamol in the treatment of severe asthma in adults, Global Burden of Asthma, The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), Budesonide dose-response. MRINZ - Rehabilitation/Stroke, New Zealand Stroke Guidelines. The major project, partly funded by the Ministry of Health, involved the production of evidence-based guidelines covering all aspects of stroke. Dr McNaughton is the co-editor of the Stroke Guideline. The guidelines form part of a "suite" of cardiovascular guidelines (including primary and secondary prevention, atrial fibrillation, acute coronary syndromes, cardiac rehabilitation) that will be a major resource for New Zealand health professionals. MRINZ - The Alcohol & Liquor Advisory Council of New Zealand identified that homocysteine levels are markedly increased in alcoholic subjects admitted for detoxification. With abstinence from alcohol the homocysteine level falls within days severity of emphysema in marijuana smokers, tobacco smokers, marijuana and tobacco smokers, and non-smokers. MRINZ - Pharmacovigilance. Specific oral contraceptive use and venous thromboembolism resulting in hospital admission, this study identified that the antiandrogen oral contraceptive agents Diane-35 and Estelle-35 increased the risk of blood clots resulting in hospital admission. This increased risk was of similar magnitude as that associated with third generation oral contraceptive agents, which have been recommended for caution regarding their use. The systemic effects of inhaled corticosteroid use in children. MRINZ - Venous Thromboembolism. The incidence of venous thromboembolism in low to moderate risk long distance air travellers: The NZATT study, Recent air travel is a common risk factor for venous thrombo-embolism resulting in hospital admission, The SIT (seated immobility thromboembolism) syndrome: a 21st century lifestyle hazard. MRINZ - Public Health Policy, This programme investigates the complexity of health care delivery and the inadequacy of dominant paradigms and the degree to which they limit policy options. It focuses on how policy can enhance human performance and aid in the establishment of a safety culture. The research findings to date show significant relationships between management of professionals and staff attitudes that influence outcome for patients.
