Rhinothermy in the Common Cold and Influenza
We need: Otherwise healthy volunteers with symptoms of the common cold or flu, who are aged 18-75 years and based in the Greater Wellington Region (not beyond Upper Hutt and Paraparaumu) to contact us within 48 hours of the start of symptoms.
The study involves: These studies are trialling a device which delivers warm, humidified air through the nose to see if it improves symptoms of the cold or flu. The study is 14 days in total. Enrolled participants will receive treatment with the device for the first 5 days, and fill in a short symptom diary each day of the 14 day study. The study involves 2-3 visits to the MRINZ offices.
Where is the study based? These studies are based at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand (MRINZ), which is in the CSB building of Wellington Regional Hospital on Riddiford Street in Newtown. Participants who are involved in the studies will have some visits to the MRINZ offices and will also be using the trial devices at home.
Reimbursement: All participants are reimbursed for their time and travel.

Other information: Those with Asthma, COPD of other significant respiratory conditions are only able to participate in the influenza study. Enrolment to the flu study requires a positive test for influenza which we test for as part of the screening visit. We are unable to recruit those who are taking medications/ have conditions which affect the immune system.
